FAQs

What’s a Gran Fondo?
It’s a group bicycle ride (like a bike tour, but not a bike race) with an especially unique feature of being associated with a professional bike race. Typically, the design is such that when you finish the ride you get VIP seating to watch the pro race. In this case it’s the Rochester Twilight Criterium.

Who can ride in the Gran Fondo?

For the 100 MILE, we ask that riders have a well maintained road bike, be physically able to ride 100 miles of varied terrain and be able to maintain an average of 14 MPH. We would like riders to be able to complete 100 miles in 7 hours (plus extra time for rest stops).

For the 50 MILE, we ask that riders have a well maintained road bike, be physically able to ride 50 miles of varied terrain and be able to maintain an average of 12.5 MPH. Simply put, if you can ride 50 miles in 4 hours (plus extra time for rest stops), you’re good!

For the 30 MILE, we ask that riders have a well maintained road bike, be physically able to ride 30 miles of varied terrain and be able to maintain an average of 12.5 MPH. Simply put, if you can ride 30 miles in 2.5 hours (plus extra time for rest stops), you’re good!

For the 10 MILE, we expect that riders have a well maintained bike (preferably a hybrid), be physically able to ride 10 miles of varied terrain and be able to maintain an average of 8 MPH. If you can ride 10 miles in about an hour and a half, you’ll do great!

What is the Rochester Twilight Criterium?
It is a professional bicycle race (a U.S. National level event) held on a one-mile long course in the center of the City of Rochester. Racers do repeated loops of the course, kind of like watching NASCAR car racing, at very high speeds. Go to rochestercrit.com for more information!

I don’t ride, but I’d still like to be a part of it, can I attend?
Yes, you can register for the VIP EVENING and get the same experience, sans the bike ride!

Can I be a part of the event or volunteer?
Absolutely! There are lots of volunteer positions available – and we can always use the extra the help! Just put your information on the VOLUNTEER page, and we’ll get in touch with all the details!
